GUAYUBÍN: The Priest’s Curse — “You were a canton and a canton you shall remain”

Guayubín, Montecristi, D.R. – In the heart of the Dominican Republic’s northwest, the town of Guayubín carries a legend passed down through generations: the curse of a priest that, according to locals, has shaped the town’s political destiny to this very day.
Elders say that during a time of growth and promise, Guayubín aimed to become its own province. The town thrived with commerce, culture, and rising political influence. But a conflict between local authorities and a respected priest took a fateful turn. After being publicly humiliated, the priest climbed the pulpit and declared: “Guayubín, you were a canton and a canton you shall remain! May you never receive more than what you’ve been given.”
Since then, every effort to elevate Guayubín’s territorial status has failed. While nearby towns advanced with investments and designations, Guayubín remained stuck, caught between nostalgia and stagnation. The legend of the curse became a part of local folklore — a tale told with reverence and a touch of fear.
Yet, some view this story as a challenge to rise. They believe that with unity, faith, and hard work, the people of Guayubín can break any curse — even one born from the pulpit so many years ago.
